Challenges at Deutsche Rück

Mobile devices are an integral part of everyday working life in many companies. However, while manufacturers’ development cycles are becoming shorter and shorter, the demands placed on device management are continuing to rise. Deutsche Rückversicherung AG therefore initially opted for the Good for Enterprise enterprise mobility management system to make device management efficient and secure, and switched to BlackBerry UEM in 2017 due to the discontinuation of Good for Enterprise.

But simply installing such a system is not enough. Expertise is required for its design and implementation as well as for its maintenance and further development. This is the only way to guarantee that the UEM is optimally integrated into the infrastructure, that all components of the UEM are used optimally, that smooth operation is ensured, and that the system is continuously optimized. When changing systems, it is also important to ensure that all previously available functions and standards are also available in the new system when configuring it.

Our solution

Deutsche Rückversicherung AG decided to work with EBF based on a recommendation from a market partner and EBF’s in-depth expertise in BlackBerry and IBM Domino. EBF’s experts were able to optimize the use of BlackBerry UEM within a very short time, enabling the insurer’s requirements to be better met and reducing the burden on the company’s IT department – while improving the user experience.

Our approch at Deutsche Rück

EBF analyzed Deutsche Rück’s existing BlackBerry UEM configuration, identified potential for optimization, then supported the implementation of the changes and has since been providing the insurer with ongoing expertise.

As part of the analysis, EBF reviewed the company’s other infrastructure and evaluated the range of functions and user experience. This revealed that usability was limited due to factors such as the lack of a single sign-on option, the app landscape was very confusing, and administration was very time-consuming for IT. In addition, it was found that, on the one hand, the functionality of the new UEM was not yet being fully utilized and, on the other hand, functions were missing—such as “Direct Connect,” which improves the performance of the BlackBerry container solution.

Our colleagues at EBF have set up a single sign-on option for various components. For example, self-service and the associated console are now more accessible, and portals such as IBM Traveler, the intranet, and other Domino servers can also be accessed via single sign-on.

WiFi authentication has been made more secure and easier to manage thanks to Simple Certificate Enrollment for the secure distribution of certificates and Certificate Based Authentication for user identification.

The app landscape has also been cleaned up and app allocation has been revised to ensure that all employees can see the applications that are relevant to them.

In addition, EBF experts have optimized/implemented the use of BlackBerry BEMS, a component that facilitates the exchange of company data between different BlackBerry applications, can send push notifications, and enables connection to file servers such as SharePoint, Box, or Workspaces. Single sign-on access has also been set up for this.

EBF has used third-party solutions for functions that cannot be covered by BlackBerry UEM. These include, for example, Acronis Files Advanced – an app for secure mobile access to company data, which is also available as a “BlackBerry Dynamics” container variant (Dynamics SDK integration) and meets the highest security standards. The GENOA Transformer solution already in use at the customer’s site, which enables the PIM container solution “BlackBerry Work” to be connected to an IBM Traveler infrastructure, has been optimized in terms of configuration and functionally enhanced to ensure greater user comfort and higher stability.

Thanks to its many years of expertise, the EBF team provided Deutsche Rückversicherung AG with excellent advice and significantly reduced the workload of its IT department. EBF’s experts continue to provide Deutsche Rückversicherung AG with advice and 2nd and 3rd level support, resolving queries reliably and quickly. This ensures smooth operation.

The result

Thanks to the optimized configuration and expanded range of functions, Deutsche Rückversicherung AG and its employees can now work much more efficiently and securely on the move—with manageable IT costs.
